Back-end services provider chosen for .PARIS

After several months evaluating candidates, the City of Paris has chosen its back-end services provider for .PARIS.

Several registry services specialists applied for the position and a twin candidate set-up combining AFNIC (the French registry) and CORE (back-end provider for .CAT) was selected.

As consultant to City of Paris, INDOM was heavily involved in the selection process and will now work alongside AFNIC and CORE on the .PARIS project.

INDOM signs new ICANN registrar contract

INDOM (4th from the right) is the first French registrar to sign ICANN's new contract designed to bring consumers an even higher level of protection.

During last month's Sydney ICANN meeting, INDOM became the first French registrar to sign the new RAA (Registrar Accreditation Agreement). The RAA is the contract binding ICANN and its official registrars.

The current RAA goes back to the creation of ICANN in 1998, was last updated in 2001, and is now clearly outdated. The various stakeholders within the GNSO (Generic Names Supporting Organisation – ICANN's policy-making body for generic Top Level Domains) have long wanted to bring consumers enhanced protection as part of a revamped RAA.

After lengthy negotiations within the community, the GNSO Council (of which I am a member), voted in favour of the new RAA last March during the Mexico ICANN meeting. The RAA was subsequently given a green light by the ICANN Board.

The new RAA toughens registrar requirements for compliance and clear business practices. It is a stronger enforcement tool for ICANN to ensure consumers are treated fairly and registrars reach the high standards ICANN now comes to expect of those companies it accredits.

A handpicked number of registrars were selected by ICANN to be part of the inaugural signing ceremony for the new RAA in Sydney. The only company in France to be asked was INDOM. "Together, the signatories represent about 50 percent of the 110 million generic top-level domains registered on the Internet," says ICANN in its official press release.

INDOM is proud to be amongst those flagship registrars working to bring an even higher level of service to domain name registrants the world over.

Our new comprehensive domain name statistics

We've been compiling domain name stats for years at DomainesInfo. Every couple of months or so, we publish the industry's major numbers: the top 10 overall extensions, the biggest generics, the biggest country code domains, the biggest European domains and a selection of the world's suffixes.

The numbers we publish are all researched and checked. It's a hell of a job but it provides our readers with an all-important feel for how our industry is doing.

The big news on our stats is that we've just completely refurbished them. We've improved the presentation of course, but we've also industrialized the process a lot more. There's new data, like a "number of names per 100 people in the country" listed for ccTLDs. And previous stat data can now be accessed by our readers, allowing for easy comparisons and trend analysis.

Check out our new stats here. The titles on the page are in French but it's all very straightforward and easy to understand, even for non French speakers. Let me know what you think.

"Internet Week" starts in Paris

The next few days are going to be crazy. The "Paris Internet Week" is starting. There's a Domainer event, ISOC France's annual domain name convention "EGENI" (on Friday June 20th) and then the main event: the Paris ICANN meeting from Sunday June 22nd to the following Thursday.

Hectic doesn't quite cover what this coming week is going to be like for us at INDOM. But this is the first time that ICANN has come to Paris for one of its 3-a-year international meetings and we're determined to make it an event to remember. In fact, everyone who's been involved in setting up and organizing this meeting (INDOM's on the board of local organizer AGIFEM) has worked tirelessly to make it a success.

The Internet is an extremely hot topic in France at the moment and I can almost guarantee that seasoned ICANN meeting participants will leave Paris in a week's time impressed. There's a lot going on, including a few new initiatives. One that we're particularly proud of is the "Official Shuttle Service" we've put together with ICANN for Paris. This is a first for an ICANN meeting: minibuses will be parked outside the hotel carrying INDOM and ICANN branding and ready to take meeting attendants to selected must-see places in Paris.

It's been an unbelievable amount of work to set this up and as a first attempt, there's bound to be a few kinks remaining to iron out. But if you're in Paris next week, go on and give it a try. Take an hour off work and let one of the shuttles whisk you away to Saint-Germain or Notre-Dame or a number of other places you've always wanted to visit.
